Lay Theism

After many years of reading, thinking, experiencing, observing, and even praying, I have finally settled into the belief that this life is all we have.  I was brought up in a typical nuclear family with Bible Belt teachings and surroundings.  I attended church and went to private, religious school.  But, after nearly four decades on this amazing, beautiful planet, I have concluded that this is all there is… there is no after-life, no mysticism, no supernatural, no omniscience, no messiah, and no god.

When you really think about it (REALLY *think* about), there is no reason to accept any of the myriad religions, and certainly not a specific religion to the exclusion of all others.  Even if you trace back to a common theological root and conclude that any mono-theistic religion is better than no religion, I still disagree.  Most of the practices and preaching baked into modern religion exclude the possibility of other religions being “kind of” right.  They just aren’t set up to allow picking and choosing of your favorite parts (which many people clearly do).  Makes more sense that they are all made up… by men.  So…

My plan is to make an attempt at blogging interesting thoughts, observations, and experiences, if not for you, then for me. Most of the people around me, including family, friends, and coworkers are still believers.  For that reason, I will write simply with the pseudonym Hugh for now.  When attitudes shift towards more tolerance and enlightenment for all of humankind, and away from the U.S. based Theocracy and ingorance, maybe then the dwindling believers of the world can work with us non-believers without proselytizing and without judgment to focus on our common problems.

For now, us secular folk discreetly and solemnly continue to raise our children, do our jobs, give to charity, and assist our fellow man with morality and integrity in tact.  It’s sad that we cannot openly profess our lack of faith out of concern that we will be judged by man and treated as “heathens” or worse. C’est la vie.
