After seeing the best SNL opening I have seen in a while, I was inspired to blog about it. First, Tina Fey nails Sarah Palin… in the theatrical sense. Then, they whipped out (oops) the whole MILF thing. But they couldn’t leave it at that. Amy Poehler doing Hillary (stop that) says that she doesn’t like being referred to as a “flirj”. Yeah, I had no clue, so I “Gergled” it like Hillary did. Who would have known that there’s something Google doesn’t know?! At any rate, the best I came up with was FLIRJ = First Lady… I’d Rather Jack-Off. Supposedly IRJ is a common suffix, so it follows that we would end up with flirj (vs. flirg, flerg, flerge, flerj, flerje, flirg, flirge, flirj, flirje, flurg, flurge, flurje, flurj, or flurdge which are clearly ridiculous and just plain wrong).

Actually, what made me laugh was later in the show when Alaska Pete (which harkins back to Produce Pete — not this douche, this douche) pointed out that Sarah Palin is not just a MILF, but is soon to officially be a GILF. Kinda funny, and had not occurred to me… although I had already heard VPILF elsewhere.

Anyway, as you may or may not know based on the general ideology of this blog, I do not share Gov. Palin’s view of the world having been created in six days because God thought it was a good idea. Nor, do I think that her youngest son was born with Down’s Syndrome because God thought that would be swell too. In fact, I think it’s sad that McCain felt he needed to add that particular contrast to his ticket. On the other hand, she has shaken up this campaign in a way that was badly needed.

I still think McCain is to be the next president, and it scares me less than Obama. I will reluctantly cast my vote for the screwed up, broken, Republican party once again. If the Democrats can ever get their shit together and start to act like they will be responsible with our money, they’ll have my vote in a heartbeat (I am not implying that I think the Republicans have been responsible with our money, but they don’t overtly want to take as much of it away). Until then, I feel like I have no choice but to deal with crazy Christians and the rest of the right outside of the political forum. At the end of the day, I guess I worry more about my checkbook than I do my kid’s textbook.

No matter where you land politically, having Hillary Clinton as the Commander in Chief of the United States has got to cause you to think about the ramifications of such a possibility.

A few days ago, Peggy Noonan summed up why she thought Hillary has been able to muster a comeback of sorts, but also paints a vivid picture of what it would mean for her to succeed:

She kept her own spirits up to the point of denial and worked it, hard, every day. She is hardy, resilient, tough. She is a train on a track, an Iron Horse. But we must not become carried away with generosity. The very qualities that impress us are the qualities that will make her a painful president. She does not care what you think, she will have what she wants, she will not do the feints, pivots and backoffs that presidents must. She is neither nimble nor agile, and she knows best. She will wear a great nation down.

Very well said, Peggy.

This is just to absurd to leave alone. What is wrong with this picture painted by the Wall Street Journal? That may be a “subscriber only” link, but here’s a pretty good synopsis:

…Pastor Jason Burrick grabbed his cellphone and dialed 911… Half an hour later, 71-year-old Karolyn Caskey, a church member for nearly 50 years who had taught Sunday school and regularly donated 10% of her pension, was led out by a state trooper and a county sheriff’s officer… The pastor, Mr. Burrick, told congregants the three were guilty of gossip, slander and idolatry and should be shunned, [Ed. emphasis added] according to several former church members. [...]

Shortly after the church hired Mr. Burrick in 2005 to help revive the congregation, which had dwindled to 12 members, Mrs. Caskey asked him to appoint a board of deacons to help govern the church, a tradition outlined in the church’s charter. Mr. Burrick said the congregation was too small to warrant deacons. Mrs. Caskey pressed the issue at the church’s quarterly business meetings and began complaining that Mr. Burrick was not following the church’s bylaws. [...]

In April 2006, Mrs. Caskey received a stern letter from Mr. Burrick. “This church will not tolerate this spirit of cancer and discord that you would like to spread,” it said. Mrs. Caskey… continued to insist that the pastor follow the church’s constitution. In August, she received a letter from Mr. Burrick that said her failure to repent [Ed.] had led to her removal. It also said he would not write her a transfer letter enabling her to join another church. [Oh no!]

Mr. Burrick repeatedly declined to comment on Mrs. Caskey’s case, calling it a “private ecclesiastical matter.” He did say that while the church does not “blacklist” anyone, a strict reading of the Bible requires pastors to punish disobedient members. “

OK, seriously??? A strict reading of the Bible? Who is he kidding? A strict reading of the Bible condones slavery, says the world was created in six days (and the “heavens” too!), that the best Jesus could do was to cure individual sick people (not entire diseases, or all birth defects, or mental illness, etc.), and that we all decend from Noah and company.

I really don’t have anything more to add to this. It’s exactly this type of thing that drove me nuts when I was a Christian, and now that I am not, just puzzles and amazes me how far away so many people are from reality. That’s all I have the energy for today…

Hey, I know, go watch this: The Atheist Delusion.
